West Side Story!! [03 Jul 2008|10:17am]

Hi Guys!

I am selling tickets to the opening night of West Side Story and a part of the proceeds from the play will be donated to Kythe (http://www.kythe.org), a foundation whose primary cause is children with cancer.

Touted to be the best musical of all time with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and original choreography by Jerome Robbins, this exciting production will be headed by Christian Bautista who will be playing the role of Tony and Joanna Ampil of Ms. Saigon fame as Maria. She will be alternating with Karylle for this role.

West Side Story was first staged in Manila in 1982 with Audie Gemora as Riff and Menchu Lauchengco as Maria. The play is an intense, dramatic dance musical with many show-stopping numbers and immortal songs like "Somewhere," "Tonight," "One Hand One Heart," "America," and "Something's Coming." It will be directed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo herself and the Musical Director is Gerard Salonga (brother of Lea Salonga) so it's sure to be an awesome show. For those who are interested, here are the full details of the show:

September 5, 2008 (Friday)
8 PM
, Meralco Theater

Ticket Prices:

P500 (Balcony Sides)
P700 (Balcony Center)
P1000 (Orchestra / Loge Sides)
P1200 (Orchestra / Loge Center)

It will definitely be a night "like no other night!" Be one of the first to catch this show! Come and be part of it. Inquiries can be sent to minnie.fong@gmail.com or 0917-8676332. Please do tell all your friends and colleagues! :)

Thanks and God bless!!

Locks of Love [18 Jun 2008|01:10pm]
A little more than three years ago, I met him. He was three, I was twenty. He barely had any teeth, but that never stopped him from smiling. He only had one leg, but that didn't stop him from being the mischievous young boy that he was. He had cancer, and so he lived each day to the fullest. His name was Cedric.

From the first time I met him, I immediately fell in love with him. He was my date every Monday afternoon. He was my valentine date that year. I bought him a new set of crayons and puzzles on that day.

He passed away almost two years ago. He was four then. I found out the day before I was due to represent Kythe for the TAYO awards. "How timely," I thought. Not that any time was a good time for one to pass away.

I struggled for many months after I found out that his family decided to bring him home and forgo the operation to take out the tumors that have spread to his liver from his bone cancer. I heard they tried out alternative medicine. And that his grandfather misses him. His heart breaks every time he sees Cedric trying to follow him around the house while hobbling with only one leg. It was truly a practice of learning how to let go.

I often wondered what it must feel like to be three and yet have to struggle with the reality of death and immense physical pain and discomfort. And it always makes me grateful to God that I never had to find out for myself.
---

Fast forward to 2008.

Many months ago, I decided that I was tired of having long hair. It was the longest my hair has ever been in my life. It came to a point when people started greeting me with "Ang haba na ng hair mo!" In fact, I realized that I haven't had short hair for more than two years!!

So I decided on that day that I was going to donate my hair to be made into a wig for a child with cancer.

Two years and more than 12 inches of my hair later, I've finally cut it off. I tied everything into a braid, cut it off, and will be sending it to Locks of Love soon.

Initially, I wanted to have a wig made locally so that I can donate it to a kid in Kythe, but I found out that made-to-order wigs cost a minimum of P15,000 pala!! So locks of love it was. Unless someone out there wants to help me make this wig a reality. I haven't really decided yet. In the meantime, I have a bag of hair in my room sitting around and waiting for me to make up my mind.

And for those who haven't seen me yet-- this is what I look like right now. My shampoo consumption has been cut down by more than half, my nape gets cold now from the air conditioning, and I hardly even have to brush my hair!!

This one's for you, Cedric. I miss you, little one.

Historia de Un Letrero [09 Jun 2008|11:39am]
The other day, I went shopping for new shoes.

For someone with only one leg.

Her name is Dianne, and she had bone cancer. She in in remission-- for two years already. But in her fight against cancer years ago, she lost one of her legs. She is in third year high school now, and is a constant honor student. She is one bright kid.

The experience was surreal, to say the least. I have never bought shoes for an amputee in my life. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the whole thing.

And sometimes, I wonder-- how does it feel to have only one leg and shop for shoes that always come in pairs?

Then I remembered something my friend told me a few months ago:

He saw a blind man playing a guitar in the darkness under the pedestrian overpass with a single lightbulb by his face. But then what good is the light to someone who is blind?

The bulb was not for him to see, but for us to see that he was blind and know that we can help.

Love Song for a Savior // Jars of Clay

in open fields of wild flowers
she breathes the air and flies away
she thanks her Jesus for the daises and the roses
in no simple language
someday she'll understand the meaning of it all
He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heavens
as close a heartbeat or a song on her lips
someday she'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
someday He'll call her and she will come running
and fall in His arms and the tears will fall down and she'll pray

i want to fall in love with You

sitting silent wearing sunday best
the sermon echoes through the walls
a great salvation through it calls to the people
who stare into nowhere, and can't feel the chains on their souls

He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heavens
as close a heartbeat or a song on our lips
someday we'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
someday He'll call us and we will come running
and fall in his arms and the tears will fall down and we'll pray

i want to fall in love with You

it seems too easy to call You "Savior"
not close enough to call You "God"
so as i sit and think of words i can mention
to show my devotion

i want to fall in love with You

my heart beats for You

Thought(s) for the day:

You can only share what you already have.

On another note, masarap ang Kopi Roti Coffee Bun or whatever you call it. I think it has too much butter and too little Kaya jam inside, but it was yummy nonetheless. :) I just added Kaya jam from Ya Kun in Singapore when I was eating it for breakfast this morning. Thanks, for the Kaya, you. :) I like how the coffee crust is "crusty" (for lack of a better term) on the outside but the bread inside is nice and fluffy.

I wonder how they were able to make the outside crusty without having the coffee flavor seep into the rest of the bun?

Yuuuuuum. :)

cold January morning [26 Jan 2007|12:51pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

I woke up today at 5AM to drive my sister to the airport, and even if I've only had 4 hours of sleep, I realized that I like waking up that early because it was such a refreshing change. I don't recall ever driving through EDSA before dawn broke, and I kind of like the calmness outside. Sure there were a bunch of passengers trying to make their way to work (or home), but the feeling was quite different. It felt good to have an early start on my day. It was so dark outside, I had to turn on the headlights to see properly. And I particularly like the cool, crisp morning air that greeted me the moment I stepped out of our front door.

Maybe I should start waking up that early now. Heehee. That also means that I have to be in bed by 10PM (at the latest) for me to function properly the next day.

Or maybe not. Since I tried to stay awake all morning but ended up falling asleep at 10AM and waking up 2 hours later. Hahaha. I'm hopeless, and this is random brain vomit. :)

----

I think I miss my sister. Although we didn't exactly spend every hour together when she was home, I kinda miss her quiet presence. It was very reassuring, because I knew that if something happened, I could just scream and she'd be in my room in less than 5 seconds. :(

----

In other random news, I hear that Mango and Zara are going to make the sizes of their clothes bigger, to adapt to the "growing" population of Spain, as was ordered by the Spanish govenrment. I already find some of their clothes a little too big as it is, paano pa kaya if they adjust it pa? Booo!
